Why Does My Voice Recording Sound Boxy? How to Fix It
May 06, 2023If your voice recording sounds boxy, muddy, hollow, or overly thick in the low-mid frequencies, it is easy to assume the microphone is the problem. In many cases, it is not. A boxy sound is often caused by the way your voice interacts with the room before the microphone captures it.
Your microphone does not hear only the direct sound of your voice. It can also hear reflections of that voice bouncing from nearby walls, ceilings, desks, booth surfaces, and other hard areas in the recording space. Those reflections arrive back at the microphone slightly later than the direct voice. When they interact, certain frequencies can become overrepresented. In a small room or booth, that imbalance often shows up in the low-mid range and creates the sound we describe as boxy.
That can happen in an untreated room, but it can also happen in a treated room. The important question is not simply whether you have acoustic treatment. The question is what the microphone is actually capturing from its position in the room.
What Does a Boxy Voice Recording Sound Like?
A boxy recording can sound congested, muffled, hollow, boomy, or as though the voice is trapped inside a small enclosure. You may also notice that increasing clarity with EQ seems difficult because reducing one problem frequency makes the voice sound thin somewhere else.
That is often a sign that you are dealing with a capture problem first and an EQ problem second.
Why Room Reflections Create Boxiness
Every recording space has dimensions: height, width, and length. Those dimensions influence how sound pressure waves move through the room and where particular frequencies build up. When reflections return to the microphone, they can reinforce certain frequency areas and create resonance.
Smaller spaces can make this especially noticeable because the microphone is physically closer to reflective boundaries. A vocal booth can be well built and still create an imbalance if the microphone is positioned where a particular resonance is strong.
This is why buying a more expensive microphone does not automatically fix boxiness. A better microphone may simply capture the problem more accurately.
Fix the Recording Source Before Relying on EQ
The best solution is to improve the voice-to-reflection ratio from the microphone’s perspective. You want the microphone to capture as much direct voice as possible and as little unwanted reflected energy as practical.
That does not mean you need a literally reflectionless or anechoic room. For optimized voice-over recording, the goal is a recording that is controlled from the microphone’s perspective. Depending on the room, that may involve changing the microphone position, changing where you stand or sit, repositioning existing acoustic treatment, or adding treatment capable of absorbing the problem frequencies.
The rear rejection of a cardioid microphone can also be useful. Pointing the rejection side of the microphone toward a more reflective area can sometimes reduce how much of that reflected sound reaches the capsule.

Can EQ Remove a Boxy Sound?
EQ can absolutely help. A parametric EQ lets you identify an over-abundant resonant frequency and reduce it. This can make a dramatic improvement when the recording is otherwise healthy.
But EQ is most effective when it is balancing a good recording—not when it is being forced to repair a major room problem. If the microphone is capturing substantial reflection energy, large corrective EQ moves can solve one problem while creating another.
A useful way to think about it is:
Fix as much as you reasonably can at the recording stage. Then use EQ to balance what remains.
A Boxy Recording Does Not Always Have the Same Cause
Two recordings can both sound boxy for different reasons. One person may have a strong room resonance. Another may be too close to a reflective surface. Another may have treatment that absorbs the high frequencies well but leaves more low-mid energy in the room. Microphone distance and technique can also change the tonal balance.
That is why copying somebody else’s EQ frequency or plugin settings is unreliable. The useful question is not:
“What frequency should I cut?”
It is:
“What is causing the imbalance in this recording?”
